Kanata Winds

Raimundo Gonzales began his musical training in his birth city of Santiago, Chile. He studied in the Composition and Arrangement program at the Instittuto Escuela Moderna de Musica and is now a Graduate composer at the University of Alberta. Huaynopo was originally written for wind quintet and Chilean percussion and was premiered in 2008.
The piece begins with a slow wave of sound that acts as an introduction to the Chilean dance theme that comes in later on. The articulations, registers and rhythms are what make this piece unique. Pay attention to the interplay between the voices, the effect is really exciting!
This is a live recording from our Spring Recital. We hope you enjoy it!

A standing Carl Nielsen with the members of the Copenhagen Wind Quintet. Nielsen wrote a great quintet for the group, and concerti for the flautist and clarinetist.
Have you heard or played the Nielsen quintet? What did you think?

Kanata Winds, on our way to rehearsal in style!
Paquito D’Rivera is quite the rave in the woodwind quintet repertoire. He is a Cuban musician and composer. His influences include jazz, and south american melodies that he fuses with American techniques and rhythmic groupings. D’Rivera plays the saxophone.
Here is his Wapango for woodwind quintet. Enjoy!
